Sushi has a reputation as a culinary luxury, but the chef-owner of Maki House Sushi wants to change that. By holding limited hours—weekday lunches only—and streamlining his operations, he keeps the focus tightly on fresh fish at accessible prices.

As Maki House's name suggests, rolls are a focus. There are nearly 30 varieties on the menu, including both classic combinations and Southwest-inspired innovations. The San Antonio Roll adds jalapeño, avocado, and spicy mayo to a crab roll drizzled with eel sauce, while the Texan Roll pairs fried onion with cream cheese and smoked salmon. The family-run restaurant also specializes in several other Japanese classics, from sashimi to teriyaki to udon noodle soup.
