Founded in 2010, the San Antonio Scorpions wasted no time digging their pincers into the North American Soccer League standings; in 2012, they finished first overall and advanced to the semi-finals. Two years later, they claimed their first league championship. Yet despite their quick success on the pitch, the Scorpions have arguably made a bigger impact off of it: all profits from the team's operations go toward funding Morgan's Wonderland, a colorful amusement park in Longhorn Quarry designed for people with (and without) special needs.
The idea stems from team owner, businessman, and philanthropist Gordon Hartman, who builds support for Morgan's Wonderland via the Scorpions' "Soccer for a Cause" program. In 2012, the team's efforts were noticed by Toyota, who committed to sponsoring a new stadium. Completed for the 2013 season, the result of that commitment currently boasts a seating capacity of 8,000, with plans to expand to as large as 18,000, so long as fan support continues to grow and the chair saplings take root in the concrete.
