Pagosa Springs' mineral hot springs are widely considered to be among the world's largest and deepest. They flow right through the middle of town, so you can enjoy a soak at three downtown spas. The main springs are a popular sightseeing stop, though at 145 degrees Fahrenheit they're far too hot for bathing. Other downtown draws include antique shops, mom-and-pop eateries, and art galleries that showcase the community's thriving artistic culture.
Head a few minutes outside of town, and you're in the midst of the San Juan National Forest. Dotted with dense pine forests, craggy mountain peaks, and undulating fields of wildflowers, the forest is a pleasant and quiet place to hike, fish, and climb. In the winter, the forest opens up to cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.
