Itinerary
- Day 1: Depart the US for Madrid
Fly overnight from the US to Spain’s majestic capital, Madrid. Located at the geographic heart of the country, close to 500 years as the national capital has gifted Madrid a wealth of mesmerizing sights, from grand cathedrals and public squares to the stadium of soccer giant Real Madrid.
- Day 2: Day at Leisure in Madrid
Jump on Madrid’s efficient metro system for your chance to explore rooms once reserved for those of noble blood at the Royal Palace of Madrid, the official residence of Spain’s monarch. The largest of any such structure in all of Europe, tours include time in rooms displaying artworks, the royal armory, and the world’s only string quintet by Stradivarius. Neighboring the palace is the equally impressive Cathedral de Santa Maria de Real de la Almudena, constructed in 1883 and containing some of Spain’s most important burials. End the day in the giant Casa de Campo park, complete with an almost endless array of walking trails and viewing points.
- Day 3: Day at Leisure in Madrid
Continue your cultural tour of Madrid with a visit to one of the world’s most significant art collections, the Prado, containing works by Raphael, Titian, El Greco, and Goya. Art lovers might also like to check out the Museo Reina Sophia. Alternatively, hit the shops by strolling along Gran Via – Madrid’s Broadway – towards Plaza del Callao and Plaza Mayor, where there’s a pick of cafes and restaurants in glorious surrounds.
- Day 4: Travel to Granada
Madrid’s geographical location and excellent high-speed rail network make it incredibly easy to explore the rest of Spain’s Golden Triangle, as you’ll discover when taking the approximately four-hour train from Madrid to Granada in Andalusia. On arrival, you’ll pick up a rental car before having time to discover the city’s most famous sight, the mightly Alhambra, one of the best-preserved Islamic palaces in the world.
- Day 5: Travel to Seville
Drive to Seville, a journey of around 2.5 hours due west of Granada. The capital of Andalusia, Spain’s southernmost region, Seville has a history that stretches as far back as the Roman Empire and includes periods under the Islamic conquest of 711AD. It then became one of the largest cities in Western Europe.
- Day 6: Day at Leisure in Seville
Begin your day at Leisure in Seville in the city’s riverside Casco Antiguo, or historic center, where you’ll find three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the cathedral, Alcazar Royal Palace, and the sixteenth-century General Archive of the Indies building. Further afield, the Macarena neighborhood is rich in religious significance, while Triana on the opposite side of the River Guadalquivir is equally enthralling. The day ends with an included flamenco show at the world-renowned fifteenth-century Casa de la Memoria, where you’ll be so close to the action the performers don’t even require microphones.
- Day 7: Travel to Córdoba
Make the journey northeast to Córdoba, which should take no more than two hours by road. The city is famed for its Moorish architecture, including the expansive Mezquita-Catedral (Mosque-Cathedral), a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984. Elsewhere, don’t miss the chance to walk across the two thousand-year-old Roman Bridge, take in the medieval streetplan of the historic Jewish Quarter, or take in some of the many twelfth-century churches dotting the city.
- Day 8: Return to Madrid for Your US Flight
Make the return four-hour road trip to Madrid in good time to board your flight to the US, returning your rental vehicle directly to Madrid’s Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas International Airport.
