About P. A. Bowen Farmstead
All of the Jersey cows at P. A. Bowen Farmstead are named after famed opera characters and singers. So it shouldn't come as a surprise that they're also treated like stars: They're milked each morning and then transferred to a wide-open, protected pasture each day. For owners Geoffrey Morell and Sally Fallon Morell, founding a farm was the next step after creating a nonprofit nutrition-education foundation—and their focus on raising healthy animals and food is evident across each of the property's 95 rolling acres.
Here, they care for a menagerie of livestock using rotational grazing techniques and modern farm technology—eschewing chemicals in favor of organic, bio-dynamic plant and animal care. Pigs root in the nearby forest, hens roam freely or settle into heated tractors in colder weather, and the bull sleeps at the foot of the owners' bed each night.
The farm's real specialty, though, is its dairy processing facility—regulated by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene—which churns out several raw artisan cheeses. Saturday walking tours across the farm unveil the inner workings of the cheese-making process. Further revealing their processes, their regular classes educate guests on topics ranging from processing chickens to animal husbandry.
