Even though the city of Florence, Alabama, has just a little more than 39,000 residents, it might be fair to say at least a third is doing something creative. Heard of the Alabama Shakes? Fashion designers Billy Reid and Natalie Chanin? If not, flip through a recent Rolling Stone and Vogue, respectively, to get a glimpse of the artists that are putting Florence on the map as an up-and-coming Southern spot with bohemian flair.

The Tennessee River is a nice addition to the Mayberry-esque town, and the AAA Four Diamond Marriott Shoals Hotel & Spa takes full advantage of it—each of the 200 rooms have a private balcony with views of the water. In addition to amenities like flat-screen TVs and deep bathtubs, there's a heated indoor pool, fitness room, and of course, The Spa at Shoals, where the signature salt glow headlines with a variety of massages, facials, and body treatments. In addition to area attractions like the Alabama Music Hall of Fame and the Natchez Trace Parkway, those that packed their putters can attempt a birdie at the championship Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at The Shoals.

Each morning, Swampers Bar and Grill serves the signature starter—two fried eggs with Conecuh sausage, cheese, peppers, and onions served on a biscuit with black pepper gravy and a side of breakfast potatoes—and other options like cornflake-crusted French toast, housemade granola, and omelets. At night, 360 Grille—a culinary mecca on the 22nd floor of the Renaissance tower and the state's only revolving restaurant—invites guests to sip, savor, and stare out at the Tennessee River Valley. Start with the shrimp and cheddar grits with a bacon jam and Tabasco foam or the jumbo lump crab cakes with vinaigrette slaw, move on to the Alabama pork loin and belly (served with jasmine fried rice and bok choy), and finish with the fried blueberry pie before wrapping up the night at Swampers, where live music is the name of the game.

  • "Overlooking Wilson Dam along the Tennessee River, this is an exceptional spot to enjoy the views, golf/fish, listen to local musicians, and visit the numerous sites among the delightful small cities of Florence, Tuscumbia, Sheffield, and Muscle Shoals."
