Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic: Waterfalls, Beaches, and Centuries-Old Historical Sites

Situated on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, Puerto Plata is best known for its sun-kissed beaches. But the province has several breathtaking geographical features inland as well. Damajagua is a natural water park of sorts—it features 27 waterfalls flowing from limestone formations. Tour guides lead groups through the falls, and you can swim and occasionally slide down the natural water slides.

You can get an aerial view of Puerto Plata and the Caribbean Sea on a teleférico, or cable car. One of them climbs 2,565 feet to the apex of Mount Isabel de Torres, which is crowned with botanical gardens and a replica of Rio de Janeiro’s massive Christ the Redeemer statue. Take a scenic drive to Parque Histórico La Isabela and you’ll find the remains of a church as well as the ruins of a colonial village.

VIP would have been more of a limited VIP. It’s very misleading and they were also not clear where we could go with the VIP band we had.

We had many issues with our room but the staff was finally able to switch us and was very accommodating. Only issue we had was with a security guard due to a miscommunication. I hope they were able to address the issue as the guy was very unprofessional.

The comfort of the bed, the jacuzzi tub in the suite, and the balcony. WiFi was free and my husband was happy! There was a mini refrigerator and a spacious closet. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

The best thing about the room was the veranda. It was huge, with a beautiful view. Caution: Don’t get sucked into the membership (aka timeshare tour). Food was pretty good. The mixed drinks were great. Nice beach. The wrist bands they give you are color coated and determine your access. There is a hierarchy there so consider yourself warned.
