The Destinations
Guatemala City is a city rising, in bloom like the orchids that cling to the crevices of the ancient Mayan temples that silently weather in the rainforest nearby. Once the site of the Mayan city of Kaminaljuyú, "Guate"—as locals call it—is fast careening toward the future, making its mark as Central America's largest city with modern highways and crystalline comercial buildings. Still, the city's charm lies in its Old World history, a curious amalgam of Native and Catholic culture evident in its stucco-and-alabaster Colonial palaces that line a network of cobblestone streets, the stage for a daily mélange of informal street markets that fade into a vibrant chorus of nightlife after dark.

While Guatemala City may be the key to Central America's past, Panama City is the gateway to its future. While steeped in a rich history of its own—the city's Colonial quarter remains meticulously well preserved—Panama City's skyline is dominated by future-facing skyscrapers that reflect a decidedly cosmopolitan attitude. In fact, the city is often called "The Miami of the South." A mixing bowl of cultures, languages, and terrains—the city's proximity to rainforests, mountains, and water is a big draw—visitors here will get a taste of the whole world with a delightful Latin twist.

And you can stand on the precipice of Central American history with a ten-day tour of these two cities courtesy of Gate 1 Travel.
