The Destination
If Savannah is the "Hostess City of the South," then its antebellum Historic Landmark District is its parlor. Georgia's oldest urban area invites you to converse with its stoic 18th- and 19th-century architecture and bask in its great green spaces like Forsyth Park. Colonial cemeteries, pre-war churches, the nation's oldest railway station, and monuments mulling the passing of time occupy the quiet streets of this grid-laid Savannah neighborhood. Art thrives and festivals bloom in a place that Le Monde magazine deemed "The most beautiful city in North America."

The Digs
Established a decade after the end of the Civil War, the Dresser Palmer House is the very model of old Savannah and Southern hospitality. This three-floor Italianate townhouse-turned-bed and breakfast with floral patterned runners, hardwood floors, chandeliers, and tall ceilings features 16 rooms, each with antique appointments, clawfoot tubs, four-post king beds—some with eaves and canopies—sitting areas, and old Southern themes. Renovated in 2009, the hotel has been updated to include wireless Internet. Savor scratch-made breakfasts like pecan French toast, baked grapefruit, and peppered bacon in the Victorian dining room. Follow candlelit and iron-wrought walkways to the back garden, where you'll find fountains with lion-head spouts. Evening socials acquaint you with the warmth of your hosts and the enthusiasm of your fellow guests with wine from the on-site cellar and hors d'oeuvres like roasted red pepper dip and spinach phyllo triangles.

The Diversions
• See the monumental fountain in Forsyth Park
• Visit the City Market, a four-block, open-air market
• Experience the dramatic repertoire of Lucas Theater, established 1921
• Call on the Mercer Williams House Museum and other historic Savannah homes
• Take a trolly tour past the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist or the birthplace of Girl Scouts founder Juliette Gordon Low
• Eat Greek on the Savannah River at Olympia Café

  • "The Dresser Palmer House was absolutely amazing. The facility was clean and incredibly beautiful. The staff was wonderful... I would recommend the Dresser-Palmer a hundred times over. We can't wait to go back."
