The Destination
Just north of the border between Washington and Oregon, an unassuming state highway traces the Columbia River. Bristling evergreens line the road, beyond which the terrain rises into forested mountainsides, sheer cliffs, and slopes smattered with wildflowers. You're at the bottom of the Columbia River Gorge—one of the country's most spectacular natural wonders, carved millennia ago by glacial ice flows. But you'll need to park the car and set out on foot to really experience your surroundings—to feel the spray of a waterfall cascading down the gorge or the cool surface of a rock formation as you trek through the pristine wilderness.

The Digs
Set on 30 acres of riverfront land on the Stevenson, Washington, side of the Columbia River, the Resort at Skamania Coves is one of the area's premier retreats. Brand-new private vacation homes, all completed or renovated since 2010, offer a view of the gorge as well as wood finishes and four-star amenities like heated floors, gas fireplaces, wireless Internet, and satellite. Private beaches are the perfect place to launch a kayak or try your hand at windsurfing—or better yet, to take in the lovely surroundings.

The Diversions
Hike a variety of trails, from family-friendly strolls through forests to the intense treks that take you 2,800 feet up Dog Mountain. Or, aim lower with water sports like whitewater rafting on the river itself. An afternoon in Stevenson is the perfect way to break up your nature tour—take in a concert or play through the Skamania Performing Arts Foundation, warm up with a bowl of smoked pork chili at El Rio Texicantina, or browse the town's quaint shops and boutiques.

  • "The Resort at Skamania Coves covers 30 acres along the banks of the Columbia River. Accommodations consist of four high-end cabin homes, each with panoramic river and mountain views."
