The Destination
The non-stop action in Washington, DC's Capitol Hill neighborhood isn't the result of impassioned debates taking place on either side of the ornate Capitol rotunda. The residential streets to the east teem with joggers, dog-walkers, and families out for stroll; busy restaurants, bars, and clubs crowd Eastern Market to the south and H Street to the north; and a steady stream of cabs hums around Union Station, full of visitors coming and going. But for all the great people-watching, the best view is still from the Capitol's west front: the two-mile-long National Mall, with the Lincoln Memorial in the hazy distance and the Washington Monument casting a long shadow over the grass.

The Digs
The Phoenix Park Hotel began as a humble boarding house for travelers arriving at Union Station. Today, it has become a bastion of Old World aesthetics just steps from the nation's corridors of power. Named after a park in Dublin, the hotel pays homage to its roots with a lively pub, Irish crystal chandeliers, and the service and hospitality of a European hotel. Suites and guest rooms read stylish country estate, with fine linens, custom carpets, and pillow-top mattresses. Downstairs at the Dubliner, live Irish music and Guinness both flow freely, as tourists, Senate staffers, and business travelers carouse in one of the Hill's most popular watering holes.

  • "If you prefer to be near the Hill but not in a convention hotel, the small but cozy guest rooms in this European-style inn across the street from Union Station may fit the bill."
