The Destination
Blessed with nature's trifecta of mountains, woods, and water, Lutsen offers tons of opportunities for outdoor recreation. Thanks to its perennially popular slopes—and ample trails for cross-country skiiers and snowmobilers–Lutsen Mountain Ski Resort—the largest in Minnesota—was hailed as the "King of the Midwest Hills" in 2009 by The New York Times. With or without snow, this resort area in the Sawtooth Mountains, just 30 miles from Canada as the crow flies, is a treat. Once the snow begins to melt, hikers love trekking along the nearby rivers that empty into Lake Superior. Or, trade rustic pursuits for domestic ones and check out the restaurants, shops, and live music options nearby in the quaint village of Grand Marais.

The Digs
Located at the foot of the Sawtooth Mountains—adjacent to the ski resort and just a two-minute drive from Lake Superior—The Mountain Inn at Lutsen offers guests a motel-style experience in the heart of Lutsen. Each wireless Internet-equipped Standard Queen room is appointed with basic yet tasteful furnishings, including two queen beds, a work area, flat-screen TV, private bathroom, and a microwave and refrigerator. Complimentary coffee and tea are available throughout the day at the inn, and for breakfast, you'll have several options nearby at the historic Lutsen Resort on Lake Superior. And after a day on the mountain or on the town, be sure to get acquainted with the inn's whirlpool and sauna.

  • This is a really nice little basic hotel with friendly staff, pleasant rooms, a great breakfast buffet down at the main lodge, and an excellent location for hiking and touring the North Shore.
