The Destination
Located about an hour north from the border of California and neighboring Interstate 5, the small city of Grants Pass in Oregon is a charming introduction into the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Towering trees surround the Rogue River, and in the warmer months, locals jump into rafts and kayaks for a whitewater adrenaline rush. Out of the water, numerous hiking and biking trails snake into the mountains. A historic downtown acts as home base for outdoor wanderers throughout the year, and its restaurants serve up award-winning glasses of wine from vineyards just a short drive away.

The Digs
Set on two acres of riverfront land outside of Grants Pass, Motel Del Rogue is a quiet property comprised of 14 cabin-like rooms. Locally operated for nearly a century, each individually decorated space shares a homespun quality: Rustic wood and gingham prints in the living areas, plush beds covered with cozy quilts, and well-equipped kitchens. Some units also feature furnished decks and large spa tubs. Take your morning coffee down to the chairs at the edge of the river, where you spent dinnertime barbecuing the night before. After a day of water rafting, return to the motel at twilight to play a board game or a round of friendly football under the shade of the forest.

The Diversions
• Go rafting with Alternative Whitewater Adventures
• Hike the Big Pine Interpretive Loop Trail
• Taste the wines at Deer Creek Vineyards
• Dine at The Twisted Cork
• Mountain bike inside Valley of the Rogue State Park

  • "Grants Pass isn't a huge tourist destination, but its location on the banks of the Rogue River makes it a portal to adventure. White-water rafting, fine fishing and jet-boat excursions are the biggest attractions, and there's also good camping..."
