The Destination
Laid out like a blanket over the rolling hills north of San Francisco, Napa Valley covers enough ground to play host to hundreds of wineries. A happy accident of geography, Napa's variety of soils and microclimates make for a huge diversity of flavors from velvety Cabernets to crisp White Zinfandels. The breadth of production has also made the region a haven for foodies looking to find the perfect fare to pair with each unique varietal. Still, despite the very healthy wine tourism, Calistoga remains a largely sleepy enclave within the bustle of Napa Valley—making it the perfect place to get away.

The Digs
You'll have your choice of two beautiful properties in Calistoga. At The Craftsman Inn, equipped with a large front porch that looks out onto the Palisades cliffs, you'll awake between soft cotton linens in a queen-size bed. Both the Howell and Palisades rooms feature plush leather sofas and private, luxurious bathrooms. In the dining room, you'll find a cornucopia of the Valley's fresh fare. Written up recently in The Press Democrat, this exquisite breakfast often includes fare like sweet corn fritters with heirloom tomatoes, bread-and-butter pudding, French press coffee, Chardonnay-poached pears, and champagne. Consult with the gracious hosts to determine the best local wineries for your palette, then head out to explore the beautiful vineyards of Napa Valley.

Or, sample a smorgasbord of high spirits and sensuality at The Wine Way Inn. The cozy fireplace, redwood deck, and garden in view of Mount St. Helena at Calistoga's oldest bed and breakfast will whet your appetite for Napa Valley's historic beauty. Both the Napa and Rutherford rooms are appointed with full-size beds and equipped with a private bathroom. In the mornings, wake to a gourmet multi-course breakfast with offerings from Gillian Kite's Inn Food Cookbook. Seasonal items may include poached pears and pumpkin pie scones, sausage plaits, quiche, applewood-smoked bacon, and fresh wild morel omelettes with Parmesan cheese and truffle oil.

  • "The Wine Way Inn was amazing. Great people and great location. The breakfast was also very good!"

  • "...The Craftsman Inn in Calistoga telegraphs a B&B experience that seems to have more in common with a sedate British village than the swagger of a locale full of spotless pickups, where a vineyard is called a 'ranch.'"
