Nude lips are super in right now, and the trend sounds so simple. We’re all born with nude lips, right? But a better name for the trend would be a-little-better-than-nude lips, and
that can take multiple steps,
as makeup artist Kat DeJesus taught my coworkers.
Another wrinkle in the trend? “Nude” isn’t the same color for everybody. For me, it’s a light mocha color; for Godzilla, it’s green.
Sorry. I’m just psyched for that Godzilla movie that’s coming out. But it’s true—finding the right shade for your coloring can be tough. To help out anyone feeling confused, my coworkers and I share our favorite nude lip shades, which are also pictured in the photo above.
I guess Bob’s isn’t a “shade,” exactly, but I give him a pass. He was a trooper for doing this.
FAVIN (second from right in the photo)
For our shoot, I wore: A combo of two products—MAC lipstick in Flare for Finery and MAC lip gloss in You’ve Got It. I realized after our photo shoot, though, they’re both limited edition! You can still scrounge them up on eBay, but for a similar look you don’t have to online bid for, try
MAC lipstick in Blankety ($16) and
MAC Dazzleglass in Sugarrimmed ($20).
I usually wear it with: For day, I’ll usually throw it on with minimal makeup to add a little polish. For night, I usually pair it with a more dramatic eye look.
I usually wear it when: Whenever! This look is so versatile, I can wear it to the office or out.
JACKIE (middle)
For our photo shoot, I wore: MAC Tinted Lipglass in Oyster Girl ($15).
I usually wear it with: Any gloss I have lying around, just for the finish. I feel like matte nude lips make me look like a corpse.
I usually wear it when: I don’t rock nude lips that often, but when I do, it’s to work. I think it’s a really good color for professional wear.
MAHREEN (right)
For our photo shoot, I wore: Sephora cream lip stain in 02 ($13).
I usually wear it with: A little more eye makeup than usual—eyeliner, mascara, and a darker shadow.
I usually wear it when: I’m spending the day out in the city!
KATIE (second from left)
For our shoot, I wore: MAC lipstick in Pure Zen ($16)
I usually wear it with: Slightly smoky eyes (I have huge lips so when I go nude, it really draws attention to my eyes). I also put on any complexion-correcting creams I happen to need that day. I don’t like a nude lip with an uneven skin tone.
I usually wear it when: I’m running errands. It’s no-fuss but polished.
BOB (the lone guy)
For our shoot, I wore: Cherry ChapStick ($1.69 on
Walgreens.com)
I usually wear it with: Some moisturizer?
I usually wear it when: I remember to put it on…
