Keep in mind that services are provided by students, but with supervision. I've usually been quite pleased with my treatments and services. Allow a bit of extra time, especially for hair color services.

My service provider, Samantha Hayden, was fabulous. She did a great job with my facial and pedicure. I had a better experience at Douglas J with Samantha than I've had at high end spas.

Would have been nice to fill out a questionaire after the treatment, to give the student tips, as I came across many things she should have done differently.

I have been to Douglas J many many times, and this last time was the absolute worst. I had a facial and an eyebrow wax. My facial was no where near 60 minutes long, and I have had this service there before and been extremely happy with it. The student who performed my facial had clearly just smoked a cigarette and his hands smelled terrible. The spa area was filled with other students talking extremely loudly. It was not a relaxing experience at all. And my eyebrows looked terrible.

I have been to Aveda for about 8 years for there salon services and would go back for that. This was my first time in their spa and I got a manicure and pedicure. Though the atmosphere was nice and the student was professional, the service itself was terrible. My nails were not properly shaped (student don't use nail clippers, just a file) and there were parts of my nails that were left completely unpainted. Also, the student had a cheat sheet, as far as the steps to follow in order to complete both the manicure and pedicure. I believe the student had been there for 4-6 months. I think the focus at the Institute is on hair, which leaves students inexperienced in the spa. The quality of service in the salon is like that of a real salon and the same is not true in the spa. I would not go back or recommend manicure and pedicure services at the Institute.
