In 1916, Jim and Elizabeth McClure moved into Appalachia, fell in love with a dilapidated old farm, and founded Hickory Nut Gap Farm. Five generations later, the farm is still going strong. It raises animals and produces 100% grass-fed beef and pasture-raised pork and chicken. In the summer and fall, berries spring up out of the ground and families from across the region descend to pick them straight off the bush and devour whole baskets of sweet blueberries and blackberries.
The premier time to be on the farm is in the fall, when apples come to harvest. As the leaves turn, the 90 acres of working farmland transform to match them. Visitors can venture through the corn maze and visit with farm animals seven days a week. Although not included with general admission, on weekends visitors can also ride on horses, hay rides, and kiddie carts. The corn maze leads guests through a twisting path of stalks that sway in the breeze, and only correctly answering the farm-themed questions will get you to the exit and the chance to buy a chilled cup of apple cider.
