About Fromagerie Belle Chevre

When Tasia Malakasis walked into a gourmet food shop in New York City, she unexpectedly found herself face to face with her future. It was cheese—specifically, Belle Chevre, a French-style goat cheese made by hand in her home state of Alabama. It wasn't long before she was journeying down south to study the art of cheese-making. She became a genuine protege, and eventually, when the company's owner retired, she took over. Since 1989, the company has racked up numerous awards and accolades for its fine cheese, which include a pimento chevre, a Montrachet-style goat cheese, and a mint julep-inspired Southen Belle goat cheese. Their rustic creamery, housed in the old town cotton warehouse, offers both guided and self-guided tours, samples at the tasting bar, and a chance to meet the goats that help make the cheese by wrapping it up with their dexterous hooves.

This was a "to do" birthday gift for one of the members in our group. We all enjoyed the tour, tasting, and petting the goats. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and accommodating. The cheese tasting was fun and delicious. And seeing the goats... well, baby goats are adorable (we happened to visit on a day when there were three babies)! As a gift idea it was a hit, we all came home with cheese to enjoy and cook with. We were told there are big changes coming sometime late spring/ summer so even if you have visited it sounds like a second visit might be fun. Highly recommend it as a destination when you have out of town guests.

This is my second time and it's just so amazing. Dennis is a great tour guide. He let us know that new products and being added so we'll definitely be back over the summer to taste all the wonderful things Belle Chevre is up too.

Docents Carlos and Dennis were friendly, funny, & informative. We enjoyed feeding & petting the 2 celebrity goats. The pastoral patio welcomes picnickers. The acoustics in the main room aren’t good, making it hard to understand the video and all fast-talking Dennis said, but they certainly aren’t enough to put us off returning to the fromagerie. Their products are outstanding, the tasting yummy.
