About Playseum Upstairs

As her fourth child neared the end of his first year, Miss Gina decided to be a home-based mom full time. She loved being closer to her kids, but it had its challenges: life was busy, but there weren't many kid-friendly public places where she and her tots could relax together. Sure, she could sign them up for classes or for the toddler-only division of the UN, but if she wanted to spend time with them, the options were limited.

One night, inspiration struck, and Gina stayed up all night jotting down ideas that seemed to flow faster than her own thoughts. She wanted to create a warm and welcoming place where parents, nannies, and children could come, create, and relate with one another.

Three years from when her pen hit paper, Playseum opened its doors. Attractions that welcome kids and caretakers include the imagined village of CityShops, where little ones can make pretend Domino's pizza and pop their heads into Safeways and pet shops. Likewise, Playseum Upstairs at the Bethesda location hosts activities such as billiards, baking, art, and music for tweens and teens. An on-site bookstore caters to both kids and adults, with cookbooks, fiction and non-fiction offerings, and school books.

Parents go with plenty of energy and patience! The kids love it and have a good time dressing up and doing all the many activities!

This is one of the few places where both my 1 1/2 and 4 1/2 year old can spend hours. They had run out of the special art project of the day which annoyed me but my kids didn't care.

There was lots to keep my grandson happy. We loved the grocery store and the nature room. Playing the band instruments was fun too.

I was disappointed with the general maintenance of the Playseum. Considering there are constantly little kids running around, it didn't surprise me that things were scattered about, but it looked like general maintenance (like the drop ceiling in the food area of the Bethesda branch) was fairly poor. My 2.5 year old still did have a good time and would never notice anything, but as a parent, it doesn't give you much confidence in the cleanliness of the place!

In general it is dirty and toys are broken. There are safety issues like uncovered outlets. It's fun for little kids yes but it's more like playing in someone's old basement than a museum which is disappointing. It's A great concept.

The animal area was very dirty and smelly. The cages needed to be cleaned.

The concept is great and similar to other play museums that I have visited. However, I was disappointed in that many of the toys were missing pieces, non functioning or broken. The fire truck in the Bethesda location, for example, clearly has a place for batteries (I am assuming for lights and sounds) but the fire truck did not move, light up or make any sounds. My 2 year old son loved playing with it none the less but as a paying customer (not a small price either) I would like to see toys that actually do what they are supposed to do. Additionally there was a wooden tool box with no tools and a mellisa and Doug wooden train without the blocks. I don't find this acceptable for a business.
