About Everglades Wonder Gardens

You don't have to travel to South America to take in some of the continent's most exotic plants—you just have to head to Everglades Wonder Gardens. Here at the nearly 80-year old establishment, visitors can explore the multihued botanicals of South America up close. While perusing the flora, they can mingle with flamingos, hens, golden pheasants, and a green iguana named Buddha, which all pay homage to the center's beginnings as a rehabilitation refuge for injured animals. This history also springs to life inside the center's museum, which additionally hosts an art gallery full of pieces by local artists and new owner John Brady.

I took my 6 year old granddaughter and my elderly parents today (90+ degree temps). However, because it has so much shaded area, it was do-able for my parents. Bring water, just in case. They have the machine feeders to feed some of the animals, but I thought that was expensive -- 50 cents for a handful of pellets. It's usually 25 cents in other places. One machine for the alligators gave us lots of pellets (a man's size hand full), but the one at the koi pond only gave us about 6 pellets. I'm assuming that machine isn't working properly and I forgot to mention it to the gentleman at the desk when we left. All-in-all, a very nice place to take small kids and we'll definitely go again.

The new manager has made a successful changeover from an old-time roadside zoo. The last time I was there, years ago, there were animals there that were too big and too old to be in small enclosures. The emphasis now is on the lovely old garden with lots of unusual plants. There are some birds and reptiles--plenty of gators and a lovely flamingo flock.
