About Sombrero at Snow Mountain Ranch

Cody Walker muses that within the stillness of Rocky Mountain National Park, "You get a sense that it's the way it should be." His father, Rex, grew up on a steady diet of cowboy films, eventually following his dream to Colorado where he met his wife, Queeda. Queeda was born into a family of homesteaders who caught and broke wild steeds. In 1959, they channeled their passion for the old-west lifestyle into Sombrero Ranches, eschewing souvenir-shop gimmicks for horseback expeditions that, much like avalanches of super glue, bond visitors with their steeds and natural surroundings.

Today, Cody carries on his parents' legacy with a staff of ranch hands from nearby homesteads and college students participating in equine-science programs all across the country. After training in a vigorous program that's evolved during more than 50 years, his employees launch short rides or lengthy adventures.

The scenery, staff, and food all exceeded our expectations. The ride could have gone further, but I suspect it was a shorter loop than usual due to the massive snow.

Since you don't know what the weather will do, bring ALL you bundle up clothes. You can change into them up there. Maybe some hand and foot warmers. They have very warm blankets but it can be cold.

The sleigh ride was so fun! Wear snow pants and lots of warm layers - it is cold in the mountains even when Denver has warm weather. Bring an apple to feed the horses after the ride!

Make sure you allow plenty of time to drive. It isn't hard to find, but figure in the time for going over Berthoud pass, drive through Winter Park, Frasier and Tabernash. haha, it is quite a distance. If you're coming from Denver, make sure to allow about 3 hours. It is a good time, and certainly worth the trip. I'd recommend, however, that you plan on finding lodging and just making a weekend out of it. The stable hands / drivers were all very kind and very informed and made for a very enjoyable experience. I'd absolutely do it again!

Great sleigh ride with a really fun group of staff! The highlight was sharing campfire stories (aka, goals!)while roasting marshmallows and drinking hot chocolate! My tip to share with other visitors is to remember to bring cash for tipping as they deserve it!

Had a very nice time; went with another couple and had a wonderful steak dinner. Food and service was over all very good and would recommend for anyone. We also spent the night at the YMCA Camp, which is part of the same property making it extermely convenient.
