Brad Smith describes his attention to detail as "a curse"—he can't sit down at a restaurant without noticing crooked trimming, poor texturing, and color transitions bad enough to bring tears to his eyes. The fastidious contractor's eyes are magnetically drawn to flaws in painting and carpentry work, and he swiftly detects and corrects similar errors when on the job.

The former Navy man's discipline and precision follow the habits of his grandfather, who retired from his post as a Marine sniper to become a nuclear engineer. After leaving the nuclear industry 25 years ago, Brad's grandfather founded Smith Construction & Property Services to stay busy. Now 80—and "strong as an ox," according to Brad—the elder Smith still helps out on the occasional job.

Brad's business can handle a wide range of home-repair and remodeling work, from painting to carpentry to pressure washing. He enjoys finding creative solutions to remodeling challenges, such as those faced by a couple who decided they wanted to expand the crown molding in their kitchen. Brad found an affordable alternative by repainting their existing crown molding in a new color that he extended several inches below onto the kitchen walls, creating the illusion of extended molding without the cost. Brad's repertoire extends beyond optical illusions, as he often produces a deck of cards to show off magic tricks and teach children his surefire strategy for winning games of cribbage
