About Houmas House

Once the sugar plantation of a well-heeled Southern family, Houmas House is now one of Louisiana's most popular historic landmarks. Occupying 38 acres of land off the Mississippi between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, it encompasses fragrant gardens, koi ponds, towering oaks, and freestanding living quarters known as garconierre. The estate's main attraction, however, is its mansion.

Built in the Greek Revival style, the mansion stands two-and-a-half stories tall, with Doric columns on three sides giving the house a stately appearance. Inside, period décor replicates the home's original furnishings, while the house itself stays true to Southern antebellum architecture with features like an unsupported helical staircase and a large mural.

The plantation also contains cottages for overnight stays, as well as places to drink and dine including restaurants, a café, a wine cellar, and the Turtle Bar.
