About White Wilderness Sled Dog Adventures

White Wilderness Sled Dog Adventures has been providing dogsledding trips since 1995. Located in the heart of the 3 million acre Superior National Forest, they access the snowy trails that traverse the pine stands and pristine lakes directly from their kennel. Groups savor a lunch cooked over a toasty campfire with homemade goodies.

It was the vision of husband-and-wife team Peter McClelland and Chris Hegenbarth to provide you with a hands on experience. Participants are not only given the chance to drive their own team, but also spend time playing with the friendly Alaskan Huskies. They share their love of outdoor activities and their love of sled dogs with each guest.

McClelland’s dedication to to providing outstanding care to the dogs is represented in the four “Best Cared for Team” awards he has received at the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon and the Hudson Bay Quest. In the National Geographic book the 100 Best Vacations to Enrich Your Life, author Pam Grout says McClelland and Hegenbarth “don’t just sell you a dogsled trip—they adopt you for a few days,” making sure guests are warm and well-fed.

The couple has a fantastic seasoned staff. Their guides come back year after year to provide friendly instruction and expert guidance. With two-thirds of the guides celebrating over ten years guiding White Wilderness trips, it’s no wonder that collectively they represent some 106 year of experience. A White Wilderness guide is highly qualified, with an average of almost twelve winter on the runners.

This was such a fun experience! My husband and I both absolutely loved it. The guides were so friendly and made you feel comfortable. First we learned how to harness the dogs, set them up for the run, and the commands and safety of driving the sled. Then on trail we were able to switch out from time to time from driver to rider in the sled. It was so beautiful and worth every penny. The staff made sure we're were very warm before we headed out so we were comfortable all day. I would say definitely check it out of you love dogs and the outdoors.

What a great adventure! Our guides Theo and Taylor were very knowledgeable and friendly. They gave us a quick lesson on how to harness the dogs and how to safely drive the sleds. Lunch on the trail was a real treat! We will be back.
