About Berkeley Plantation

Constructed in 1726, the Georgian mansion at Berkeley Plantation is the birthplace of Benjamin Harrison V—a signer of the Declaration of Independence and Virginia's fifth governor—and his son, President William Henry Harrison. Still featuring 18th-century details and additions––including arches later installed by Benjamin Harrison VI, a descendant of original owner Benjamin Harrison IV, under the direction of Thomas Jefferson––the house is populated today by guides dressed in period garb. These experts point out significant artifacts in the main building and give visitors a chance to explore its artfully designed and manicured grounds on their own.

Each summer my grandchildren come to Virginia and I try to give them a piece of Virginia history or interesting site. At 13 and 11 I was glad to see them enjoy a taste of Colonial history.

We loved our tour of the Berkeley Plantation. So much history at this Plantation. The gardens are beautiful and we took our dogs and they enjoyed the walk around the gardens and by the river. Dogs cannot go inside the Plantation, but they are allowed on the grounds.

Excellent tour of the plantation house, gift shop with variety, and areas with artifacts of interest. Rainy day discouraged walking the grounds or to the James River.
