Great self guided tour route. Takes about an hour and half to get through. For $5 you can get an hand held audio guide. Teens and adults all enjoyed.

My brother in-law was visiting from Florida and we wanted to do something on a rainy day. We went to the Mansfield Reformatory. We decided to take the guided tour and we were glad we did. Derrick was our tour guide and he was so informative. We had a great time. Tour was 1 1/2 hours. We were there about 3 hours.

Staff very friendly and helpful. Bundle up, the inside is very cold and you're outside basically. Beautiful architecture!

Might be a little bit pricey for the experience. However, I would recommend going if you're interested in something like this. Our family of 5 did the self-guided tour and did not rent the "wand" for additional info. We took our time and spent about 1-1/2 to 2 hours; could have taken longer if we read everything. The staff at the ticket counter was very friendly, patient, and helpful. The cell block was very cold, as mentioned, and be sure and have a coat.

Very cool visit. Love the restoration as well as seeing some of the old worn building. They are doing a great job with it. And of course I loved the Shawshank info throughout.
If you go in the winter, dress warm. The tour is pretty much inside, but deep in the prison it gets cold. The restoration isn't complete and there are some broken windows. It did add to the charm for me.
