My car's 15 years old and I never had the A/C serviced - the air was just slightly cold. They explained the steps to me (evacuate the system, check for leaks, then fill with new refrigerant). It was nice that I could read the gauges myself on the machine they used for the process, and so I'm satisfied they did a good job.
