About Green Meadows Golf Course

When Marion “Spitz” Eipperle decided in 1971 that he wanted to open a golf course on his family’s land, his fellow farmers thought he had come unhinged. But that didn’t stop him. He shrugged off the snickers of his detractors and recruited the help of friend and mentor Harley Hodges. Together, they cut down a plot of corn stalks and evicted every last scarecrow to make way for Harley’s design: an 18-hole course that would careen through the farmland and tangle with local creeks on both the front and back sides. Eipperle’s dream finally became a reality when Green Meadows Golf Course opened for play on Memorial Day weekend in 1973.

Today, Spitz remains the course patriarch, handling its affairs alongside his children and grandchildren. Just as it did that fateful day in ’73, the terrain gives players a tour of the Eipperle acreage, hopping over the first creek at six points on the front side and over the second creek four times on the back side. One of these holes, the par 5 fifth, is the course’s signature undertaking, known for a tee shot that must fly 220 yards to clear the creek, a second shot that must be steered right around a late-fairway dogleg, and a third shot that must give the grass a secret knock before being allowed to settle on the green.
