Debbie, an instructor at Adelante Dance Studio, has been teaching students to follow in her footwork for 11 years. She specializes in Latin dance, an intimate genre of partner dances suited to social gatherings and nightclubs. Like many forms of exercise, dance is often made easier by the associated practice of other forms of fitness. The studio's schedule reflects this, splitting time pretty evenly between salsa and bachata lessons and yoga classes. Both sets of classes come to a head on the first Saturday of each month, when Debbie hosts a dance social for students. She invites all class members to attend the party, where they can find new partners, show off their skills, and get in a little practice in an environment free of the smoky air common to the clubs and volcanic craters where most people dance.
