Traif: A User's Guide

Global Soul Food | Shareable Small Plates | Focus on Pork and Seafood | Stunning Garden Patio | Acclaimed Bacon Donuts

Sample Menu

  • Small plate 1: seared butterfish with spring peas and tomato marmalade
  • Small plate 2: foie gras with bacon, a sunny-side-up egg, and maple syrup, which the New York Times praised for its “chutzpah”
  • Small plate 3: a salad of snap peas, arugula, grapefruit, sunflower seeds, feta, and spiced and smoked vinaigrette
  • Dessert: bacon donuts with dulce de leche and coffee ice creams, which Brooklyn Magazine hailed as “devilishly delicious”

What to Drink: Though Traif's wine and beer options are ample, its cocktails are the real star. Exhibit A: the Rude Little Pig's blend of orange liqueur, pomegranate, and lapsang-infused tequila gets served up in a glass rimmed with bacon.

What's in a Name? Traif, the Yiddish word for "non-kosher," is an apt moniker for an eatery dedicated to pork and shellfish. However, Chef Jason Marcus whips up several kosher options for the neighboring Hasidic community, as well.

Where to Sit: If the weather's nice, try grabbing a spot on Traif's outdoor garden patio, which Atlantic Monthly called “stunning.”

    While You're in the Neighborhood

Before: At Pierogi (177 N. 9th Street), fight the urge to bite into the work of contemporary artists on the off chance it's filled with sauerkraut.

After: Boogie down to live music at Pete's Candy Store (709 Lorimer Street).

If You Can’t Make It, Try This: Check out Chef Marcus's take on Mexican cuisine at Traif's sister restaurant Xixa (241 S. 4th Street).
