About East West Team Martial Arts Philly

For the instructors at Martial Arts Hero Factory, karate has always been a family affair. Master John McGonnigle Sr. earned his first black belt at age 16. His son and fellow instructor, John Jr., began to learn martial arts moves when he was two, imitating his dad while rolling around in his playpen. And Madison McGonnigle has gone from a student in the school's Little Ninjas program—geared toward 3–6-year-olds—all the way to becoming its teacher.

The McGonnigles put all of this expertise to use during their classes, in which they teach students of all ages the strikes and blocks of Shotokan karate, as well as the self-defense maneuvers of Krav Maga. All-in-all, they believe learning martial arts not only improves physical strength and the chances of defending yourself against dangerous wooden planks, but also character. Though they focus on rehearsing swift kicks and punches, each lesson also emphasizes values such as respect and teamwork.

My daughter really enjoys it. She's been to a handful of classes and beginning to flourish. We were overwhelmed with choices, we are very pleased with this choice.

My son is 3 years old and he enjoyed his first class...although he did not earn his belt. The instructor (John) was very nice and patient with him. The first class focused on listening skills, which I knew my son would have a hard time with because he's energetic and tends to be all over the place at times. He also did some punching and blocking, but he got a little distracted as other children started to enter for the next class. We attended the Saturday class at 9 am and it lasted about 30 mins. Overall, we enjoyed the class. I'm looking forward to the next session and seeing how his self-discipline and listening skills improve.

My 3 year old son just had his first class and loved it! Sensei John was patient but firm with my high-energy son. I loved how he was not babied at all and that good behavior expectations are high, despite his age. I look forward to making karate a weekly activity for him.
