About Maloof Foundation

For more than half a century, internationally renowned woodworker Sam Maloof remained a leader in his field by crafting furniture that included rocking chairs for four US presidents. While some of his pieces now grace permanent collections at acclaimed sites such as New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, more than 100 pieces are exhibited at the Maloof Foundation museum.

Housed in Sam's hand-built 16-room residence, the museum showcases rotating exhibits in gallery spaces such as the Pyramid Room and the Jacobs Gallery. Before becoming a museum, the residence was relocated from its original lemon grove to a 6-acre site, where it's now nestled amid lemon trees and a 4-acre Maloof Discovery Garden that features sculptures and native California plants. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the residence opens for docent-led tours twice a week and doubles as a gathering place for programs such as crafts workshops.

Make appointment early to go on the tour because they are small and fill up fast. Besides, they only provide tours a couple of times a week. The grounds are open and free for anyone to visit but the home is only accessible as part of the tour.

This is a good example of how to live in a small space, and yet with great taste, and artistic abilities make it a grand way of living.
