About Fort Ticonderoga

Fort Ticonderoga and its surrounding grounds are like one big history book. Following its construction by the French in 1755, the strategic military outpost was conquered first by the British and then by American forces—marking one of their earliest victories during the Revolutionary War. After independence was secured, Fort Ticonderoga became one of the country's earliest tourist destinations and one that continues to draw visitors today with family fun activities. Visitors spend their day discovering the beauty and experiencing the history of Fort Ticonderoga. A featured exhibit, Great Wars: Ticonderoga & World War I, explores the deep connections with the First World War.

  • Size: 2,000 acres surrounded by mountains and the waters of Lake Champlain.
  • Eye Catcher: Explore the French Army’s defense against the British invasion, which climaxed in the 1758 epic Battle of Carillon. Daily weapons demonstrations will take place and guests can explore programs, new exhibits, gardens, and other family adventures along the 2000-acre historic property. New special events and reenactment in 2019 allow the guests to explore the history on a large scale.
  • Crown Jewel: the King's Garden, where flowers surround brick walls and walkways, off of which shaded tables let patrons enjoy a quiet picnic. Apple pick from heirloom trees and visit with friendly heritage animals.
  • The Building: the soldiers' barracks encompasses three stories and 10,000 sq. ft. of gallery space covering topics from prehistory to the 20th century.
  • Outdoor Activities: visit Mount Defiance, included with general admission, for a birds-eye view of Fort Ticonderoga, hike the Battlefield Hiking Trail, and get lost in our 6-acre Heroic Corn Maze.
  • Special Events: Bring the family to the Heritage, Harvest & Horse Festival on 10/5 for a full day of autumn fun!

My niece and I enjoyed a leisurely stroll through the Fort. The views were great & every time we asked a question , it was answered very well. It was great to learn things we did not know before ( or in my case, had forgotten.)

A great historical stop for kids and adults alike, Fort Ticonderoga will take you back in time with role players and activities to match the timeline for when she was an active fortress. In the fall they have a huge corn maze and festivities to celebrate harvest. Some areas of the fort are being renovated to its former glory. Overall, a great experience!

The history and the views were well worth the trip on a chilly day in October with the colors of leaves changing in the background.
