Q&A with Jessica Kost, Owner

Besides making clients happy, what do you like most about your job?

The thing I love the most about my job is watching art works come to life by people who initially thought they couldn't make anything. It's a magical experience and fills me up with such pride for each person who comes to a workshop. I hope they leave with a sense of accomplishment and a higher self-worth.

When and how did you first develop a passion for your work?

I developed a passion for social art-making in college. I would stay up all night with my friends, making art and drinking wine. It didn't matter what we were making—it was all about being creative together. Once I was out of college, and immersed in my career, I kept looking at the art I had made and longing for a spark that would inspire me to take it back up again. After a while, I was sick of feeling guilty for having blank canvases stuck in the corner and decided to find new people I could make art, with the hope that I could rekindle my passion for art. I did, and it worked. I was finally making art again and feeling that wonderful closeness with others in my creative circle. I decided to turn this into a business to spark that same feeling in others on a larger scale.

Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?

We encourage people to be playful, add their own ideas, and create their own masterpieces. Making art is an activity similar to bike-riding or bowling. We're not expecting people to make gallery show pieces. We only ask that they try something new.
