The Vibe: For almost 30 years, regulars have been comparing this laid-back neighborhood spot to the bar in Cheers.

Behind the Name: In 1855, San Francisco’s streets teemed with crimps—men and women who kidnapped sailors and forced them onto Shanghai-bound ships. Foremost among them was a local saloon owner called Shanghai Kelly.

While You’re Waiting: Check out the bawdy messages on the bar’s letter board. Fainter hearts can survey the bumper stickers, Steelers posters, and photos on the walls instead.

When to Go: Thanks to the flat-screen TVs dotting the back of the bar, Shanghai Kelly’s is a great place to catch the game, especially if you’re a Steelers fan.
