About USS Pampanito

Though it survived six war patrols in the Pacific and an at-sea rescue of 73 POWs, the USS Pampanito is no match for the ravages of salt and wind. That’s why every seven years the San Francisco Maritime National Park Association hauls the 300-foot submarine from its perch at Pier 45 and restores it, piece by piece, to its WWII-era glory. Such meticulous upkeep and respect for original detail have earned the vessel its status as a National Historic Landmark. While the museum's crews keep the exterior free of salt erosion and smudge marks from nuzzling seals, curators use the interior as a gallery for historic artifacts that tell about the ship's accomplishments and the men who ran it. The vessel's narrow halls host the 80-man crew’s letters, memorabilia, and oral histories, as well as interactive educational programs for adults and kids. For an extended visit with history, the ship is available for educational birthday parties that offer access to otherwise restricted areas of the vessel, as well as daylong and overnight outings.

Lot of ducking and bending over for me, 6' 4" but it was very educational. I enjoy learning about our countries history and this tour teaches us a lot of what our men went through during the war.

Great value. While not a large exhibit, it is nonetheless impressive. Self guided so spend as much or little time as you like.

We had our boys overly excited to be able to visit this site all the way from Finland. The historical part told by the older gentlemen was especially interesting.

Marvelous experience. A piece of history needs support financially to adequately preserve it. All school kids should visit the sub to imagine how the submariners endured the hardship on board under the water to face constant threat of enemy attack. Would visit it again soon. Worth the time and money.

Really informative if you have the podcast in your smartphone or tablet and go through the submarine. Great experience for families but it is tight quarters.

The kids loved it. I appreciated listening to the audio and telling them fun facts from it, especially the personal stories and the rescue stories. It's a tangible encounter with history!
