About Clay Hill Stables

Since founding Clay Hill Stables in 1964, British Horse Society–certified instructor Emmie Prettyman has passed her vast equine expertise on to legions of horses and their riders through a variety of services. Emmie captains a team of instructors certified to teach the English style of riding as well as administer first aid and CPR, ensuring safe and sound lessons for students as young as 6. Beginner classes work to establish fundamentals both on and off the saddle, including riding positions and basic grooming and tacking. Once riders have demonstrated proficiency at the paces of walk, trot, and canter, they may be eligible for the jumping work in the intermediate/advanced class, where they build on skills with more intricate flatwork and jumping exercises, as well as have the opportunity for trail rides and horse shows.

Great experience for my 6 year old. The ponies and instructors were so patient and safety was stressed and they loan the required hats ( I hear these are expensive to buy) but the pony Misty was so sweet It is a farm in the middle of town so to speak only 15 minutes from DC and we will be back in the spring

Very nice lady with a farm nestled in the middle of the suburbs. My daughter had two sessions and loved it. Well worth the price.

Our first lesson was with Katie who did an awesome job of patiently walking us through getting the horse ready and riding it. Our second lesson was also great. We practiced what we learned in our first lesson and some more. Natalie was our instructor and again, she was very patient and fun. Our horses Cash for the first lesson, Charlie, Marlie and Emp were sweethearts.

A fantastic experience. The wife and I went thinking it was a simple trail ride with the horses already saddled and we would just sit while the horses led the way. We actually were instructed on preparing and tacking the horse for the lesson. During the lesson we were actually taught how to mount, steer, control, and care for the horse. In all our years of horseback riding, this was the first time we actually learned what to do. We have been taking follow up lessons now for the last six months. This is worth every penny.

They were all so nice. I had a hard time finding the place the owner came and met me to take me there. So very kind and friendly. My daughter loved it.

It was a lot of work reserving a spot but it was well worth it . My group was kind of large so I thought we weren't going to be able to do a lot in an hour . The instructor broke us up into two groups so we would be able to actually ride the horses

Bring a comfortable chair to sit in while waiting for your child to finish their lesson.
