About John Wayne Birthplace

More than a century ago, 216 S. Second St. in Winterset, Iowa, was the childhood address of John Wayne. Today, the four-room home houses the John Wayne Birthplace, a museum that celebrates the legendary actor's career and has attracted more than one million visitors to date. On display are rare photographs of Wayne, letters to him from fellow actors, and memorabilia from his films, including an eye patch he wore in True Grit .

There is a large museum dedicated to John Wayne being built that will include 2 million dollars worth of John Wayne's personal things. I would probably wait until that is built to do both at once. Also, you gotta go find some of the covered bridges of Madison County while in the area. The drive through the area alone to get to the bridges is half the adventure!

Be sure to check the website for possible road closings. It was very helpful knowing that in advance.

The tour guide was very well informed, ready to answer questions and add extra information. The collection of items related to John Wayne was extensive and interesting. I was proud to show my out- of- state friends another one of Iowa's treasures.

Any one who is a fan of John Wayne would appreciate seeing this. The tour is only 20 min. long. The house he was born in is small, but filled with lots of memorabilia about his life and movie career. There is also a gift shop where you can purchase John Wayne merchandise.
