About Jose's Grill

After a 23-year career working at the Hay Adams Hotel, Jose Cardenas branched out and opened his own restaurant, Jose's Grill. He brings many Latin American and Bolivian flavors to his menu, as he grew up eating those foods, but also works in dishes culled from his career at the hotel, resulting in a Latin-influenced selection of international dishes.

He shows off pure Bolivian flavors with his salteñas, beef-filled pastries filled with a sweet and spicy sauce center, much like the Earth's core. For the main course, he grills New York strip steaks and T-bones, sautés shrimp scampi, and boils shellfish, fish, and octopus in the rich broth of his sopa de mariscos. He finishes off meals with a pair of sweet and creamy desserts: flan and cheesecake. He even adds special touches the two classic sweets, topping his flan with liquid caramel and icing his cheesecake with a layer of sweetened soft cheese mixed with cream and eggs.

Food was pretty good, only issue was that the place was a bit cold, but then again it happened to be almost almost empty tonight, put a bunch of bodies in and I'm sure it would have been quite comfortable.

Saltenas and Silpancho were super good. Got to admit we didn't have the highest expectations because this is one of very many such Latino restaurants in the area and they tend to be okay but usually not too great. We were very pleasantly surprised - also got peanut soup and another soup which were good also.

While the food was fine, the wait for the food was very long. After 15 minutes, staff told us they ran out of the calamari, and we ordered saltenas (an appetizer), which didn't arrive until we asked for the check. Had to wait over 20 minutes for the entrees to arrive. The Lomo Saltado was flavorful, but the Salpino (??) didn't have a lot of taste. Overall, like the food and atmosphere, but the delay in getting food to the table was long (only dinner rolls available if you don't order an appetizer).
