Q&A with Jenny Tucker, Owner, Founder, Teacher
What is one of your signature services? How is it performed?
I am best known for my children's art classes. I have been teaching art for eight years and have been a professional artist for more than 20 years. I teach the art of creativity, which means that I teach art history and techniques from different artists throughout history. All of my classes are drop-off, including my classes for toddlers ages 2.5–3.
Sometimes it's all about the little things in life. What supplemental courtesies do you include with your main services to leave clients with a smile on their face?
I offer a very flexible service to my clients. Since I am a parent as well, I know how difficult it can be to fit everything into a week, and I don't want art to get lost in the shuffle. I make all of my classes "as your schedule allows," which means parents can purchase a set of eight classes and use them as they wish. I keep track of when the child attends so they don't have to, and if they can't make it one week, it is not necessary to make it up.
What's one tip for first-time customers that will make them feel like regulars?
Make sure your child is dressed for making a mess. I do have smocks the kids can wear, but it never fails that red paint or oil pastel finds their way onto a new dress. Also, parking in the village of Zionsville can be tricky sometimes. I find it easier to park one block north of Cedar Street on the residential streets if all of the spaces in front of the studio are filled. I am also happy to come out and bring a child in from their car if the parent has other kids in the car or can't find a space. They can call my cell phone and I will run out to get them.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
Because I am a small business—and I mean small—every child gets my full attention and expertise. I am the only teacher, and there is only one class going at a time, so it is calm, cozy, and comfortable for the students. Class sizes are small, and I tailor each class to the age group, so everyone's needs are met. I also have a long-standing reputation in the area as a talented and caring teacher. Since I live in town and have been teaching for eight years, I know almost every elementary-aged child in the area, and am always thrilled to be recognized and hugged at the grocery store. I take my reputation as "Miss Jenny" very seriously, and the parents feel good about leaving their kids with me, because they know they will be loved as well as taught.
