Gather at Afterguard Sailing Academy, located at 1285 Embarcadero in Oakland. You will spend most of the day on the water, sailing aboard one of Afterguard's fleet boats, carefully chosen based on weather conditions, group size, and vessel availability.

To ensure personalized instruction, classes feature one instructor with up to four participants for the two-day class, or up to six participants for the one-day experience per boat.

Dress in comfortable, hiking-style attire. Layering is key: consider vests for added warmth and wind-breakers if rain is predicted.

Opt for soft-soled shoes with good traction to avoid leaving marks on the deck. For safety reasons, flip-flops or bare feet are not allowed. A brimmed hat with a secure fastening and gloves for grip and warmth are also recommended.

Minimal preparation is required before your class. Simply pack a lunch and plenty of water to stay hydrated, or take advantage of the nearby Starbucks for convenience.

Remember to take any refillable bottles with you at the end of the course to avoid leaving them behind. Sunscreen, chapstick, and sunglasses are essential for protection against the elements, and accessories like glasses and hat keepers can prevent them from being lost.

Bathroom facilities (the head) are available both at the facility and on the boats. Ensure you are familiar with using the head on the boat before departing from the docks.

The sailing route depends on weather conditions, but you will likely explore the Oakland estuary and possibly venture further into the bay. The academy aims to provide a mix of experiences, from calm waters to more adventurous sailing, ensuring a memorable time.
