Q&A with Gary Small, Teacher (Sensei)

Apart from your business's main attraction, do you offer any "hidden" services or activities that visitors are always delighted to learn about?
We have showers, and we also offer seminars seasonally with world-class visiting instructors. For parents, we frequently offer a parents' night out by entertaining kids at the dojo. We also do test-preparation classes and fitness training. Ania is trained as a Pilates instructor and teaching Pilates, and parkour classes are occasionally offered as well.

What special training do you or your staff have?
I have been involved in the martial arts for 40 years. I earned my fifth-degree black belt in Aikido in 2006. My wife has been training for more than 30 years and is also fifth-degree black belt. She is also a psychologist.

What’s your favorite part of your job?
I love this practice for a variety of reasons. It is a great physical workout, and it is always amazing to see the power it has to improve people lives. I am really lucky that I get to spend my time working on this practice and ways to make our dojo a better place.

Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
I consider myself a student and a teacher, and I spend as much time as I can with our teachers. We are parents of a 10-year old boy and a 16-year-old boy. My wife and I teach almost all of the classes, and our schedule is pretty full. I love teaching kids, which is why I teach most of the children's classes myself. We also view what we do as a practice and not merely a fitness activity. Aikido is about making the world a better place.
