What To Expect

Guests are invited to step onto the picturesque grounds of Briar Rose Herbs, a woman and Black-owned herb farm and apothecary nestled in Croom, Upper Marlboro, Maryland. This 4-hour immersive journey begins with a captivating guided farm tour led by owners Imara and Andrea. As participants walk the expansive fields, they will learn to identify native and medicinal plants, discovering species used for centuries by diverse communities in the Mid-Atlantic region. The small group tours, capped at 8-10 participants, ensure a truly personalized and engaging experience amidst the natural beauty of the farm.
From the fields, the experience transitions to a relaxing tasting of herbal teas, expertly crafted from plants grown right on the property, accompanied by light, fresh snacks. The core of the experience unfolds as Andrea, a co-owner, scientist, and herbalist, leads a hands-on class on the foundations of herbal medicine. Guests will gain a deeper understanding of what makes plants work, how traditional preparations are made, and the science behind these ancient remedies. In the commercial kitchen, they will harvest and prepare herbs themselves, then craft 2–3 herbal medicines, such as a healing salve and a honey-and-vinegar oxymel, to take home. Every step is carefully guided, and every question is welcomed, making this experience accessible for all, with no prior herbal experience needed.
