The audio tour was great! Very informative, not too long or strenuous; if you would prefer to drive to a couple of farther mounds you can, or you can take up to a ten-mile hike and several rounds of stairs to the top of Monk's mound. The museum was excellent as well. I particularly enjoyed the part about the research process which I haven't seen elsewhere. Will definitely go back again.

We really liked the Interpretive Center! The audio tour was helpful in understanding the history of mounds and stockades. I wish we knew that the audio tour is for Interpretive Center as well. We toured the center on our own and then when we went to pick up our iPods, we realized they had audio tour for the center as well. We went on two trails as well and saw lots of deer, monarch butterflies.

Tour is good and information but must read below. Do know that the museum is open and all exhibits are free of cost. In this tour you will given an ipod with ear buds, you can bring your own ear bugs if you have if they are more comfortable. Keep in mind that the audio tours covers external grounds (and not internal exhibits) as I was wrong about it. Also at 2:00pm and may other times as well, there is a free walk in tour which is even more fun to attend. This audio tours covers 3 or 4 trails, which also includes the Monk mound which is the biggest one. The audio tours are open so no need to call them, masks are mandatory in museum. You also get a book as part of the deal, which is awesome.

Call ahead to make sure they're offering audio guides. I went back in November, and due to COVID regulations, they were not doing the audio guides at the time. I returned today, and the audio guide was one of the best I've experienced. It gave good instructions on where to walk and look, was packed with information, and was well paced. I look forward to reading my guidebook and using my tote at the supermarket!

About Cahokia Mounds Museum Society

Between AD 700 and 1400, the city of Cahokia gradually rose from the floodplain of the Mississippi River to become the largest city north of Mexico. Across 6 square miles, its population of 20,000 people worked together to create a thriving community grounded in astronomy, agriculture, and economics. To this end, they erected large, lasting structures such as an enormous wooden calendar that notified citizens about the changes of the seasons. Giant earthen mounds served as the foundation of the city and the site of the big mud fight that decided the mayoral election each year.

Through careful excavation, research, and reconstruction, the Cahokia Mounds Museum Society aims to preserve the site and educate visitors about its importance. During visits, guests on self-guided tours can explore 2200 acres of the city, including the 100-foot-tall Monks Mound and Woodhenge, the Sun calendar.
