Carlsbad, California: Coastal Town North of San Diego

Carlsbad’s swath of golden coastline, nestled between San Diego and LA, is often called the Riviera of the West. It connects several of SoCal’s most well-known beach towns, including La Jolla and Coronado. The city was founded when an artesian well was discovered there in the 1880s, and the locals christened it after Karlsbad, a health-spa village in Bohemian Europe. The discovery of the mineral spring—coupled with the arrival of the Arizona Eastern Railway—helped promote Carlsbad as a tourist destination. It retains a small-town feel, though; its downtown is lined with boutiques, antique stores, and restaurants.

Unspoiled natural beauty is part of what draws people to Carlsbad. Carlsbad State Beach stretches for 4 miles along the Pacific Ocean; here, visitors can swim, surf, or stroll beside the nearby rocky bluffs. The city is also renowned as a premier growing region for poinsettias and ranunculus. Each year, The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch herald the arrival of spring as 50 acres of ranunculus fields blossom into a spectacular burst of color.

My family had a great time at this resort. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The resort was beautiful and close to so many great attractions and places to eat. The pools were great and the fire pits at night were so nice to sit by. Great value.

The property was absolutely beautiful. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. I loved how there seemed to be a side for adultsfor quiet and relaxation, then another side for children with playgrounds, water parks, basketball and tennis courts. They also have a lot of activities for the kids.

The resort was nice, seemed to be very clean. Our room was right along the road which was a little obnoxious, and the bed was not comfortable but the pools were great, as were the fire pits and the poolside bar. Had underground parking, however, despite parking next to the elevator and keeping our rental car locked, it was broken into the last night we were there and staff didn’t seem to care.

Didn’t have our reservation when we arrived, broken bathroom sensor that kept going off on all night, loud neighbors until 2am. The only thing we seemed to enjoy this trip was the pool, which is so unfortunate because we stayed here before and enjoyed our time.
