The Itinerary
Day 1: Depart the US for Helsinki, Finland.
Fly overnight from the US, touching down in the Finnish capital in the early morning, ready to seek out the sights in a city that has remained an underrated gem of the region for too long. Situated on a sublime position of the Gulf of Finland, Helsinki has a rich architectural history, and a fascinating culture, which can be explored in detail at the National Museum.
Day 2: Day at Leisure in Helsinki.
Learn some of the geography of Helsinki with a hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus tour around the city, taking in the likes of Senate Square, home to the national parliament and cathedral. Alternatively, you could opt for a cruise among the city’s elegant waterways, before heading to Suomenlinna. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a fortress built in 1748, spans eight islands, and makes for a very worthy use of an afternoon – do like the Finns and take a picnic.
Day 3: Travel to Finnish Lapland.
Travel by air on a direct flight between Helsinki and Ivalo, the gateway to Finnish Lapland. Situated beyond the Arctic Circle, this village on the river of the same name has become the go-to destination to experience all Lapland has to offer, from the midnight sun and aurora borealis (Northern Lights) to winter sports activities including snowmobiling, husky sledding, ice fishing, and cross-country skiing. You overnight at Kakslauttanen Artic Resort in a small pine log cabin/chalet complete with its own fireplace and private sauna. Breakfast and Lunch are included.
Day 4: Admire the Night Sky by Overnighting in a Glass Igloo.
Switch from your pine log cabin to one of the resort’s glass igloos for a night beneath the stars without the need for a tent! Designed to provide the privacy of their forest location but also an uninterrupted view of the sky, a night here is one of the most comfortable ways possible to await the potential appearance of aurora borealis. Breakfast and lunch are included.
Day 5: Travel Back to Helsinki.
Depart Ivalo and Finnish Lapland for the return flight to Helsinki. On arrival, you might like to do some last-minute souvenir shopping, take a walk through the beautifully-maintained Esplanadi gardens, or stop by a café. The latter aren’t hard to find since Finns have one of the highest coffee consumption rates in the world.
Day 6: Fly back to the US from Helsinki. Return to the US, ready to share your thoughts and memories of this amazing week with friends and family back home.
