Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker
A Christmas story and folktale told in two acts, Great Russian Nutcracker opens on the magical Uncle Drosselmeyer preparing the life-sized toys he will bring to Mayor Stahlbaum’s Christmas Eve party, where he presents a Nutcracker doll to young Masha. In a fit of jealousy, Masha’s mischievous brother Fritz breaks the doll, leaving Masha heartbroken. Under the cover of nightfall, after all have gone to sleep, the Rat King does battle with the brave Nutcracker Prince, who defeats the furry fiend with Masha’s help. The battle’s end ushers the Nutcracker Prince and Masha through the Snow Forest, where Russian folk legends Ded Moroz (Father Christmas) and Snegurochka (Snow Maiden) escort them to the enchanted Land of Peace and Harmony in the ballet’s second act. There, Masha and her Nutcracker Prince are welcomed with a grand celebration of world cultures, playful animals, and ballroom dancing—making Masha and the audience wonder if this was all a dream.
