Intro class was scheduled for 1pm to 1:45pm. We got there 1:04pm. Took us 5 minutes to sign the waivers. I had called this location 1 hour prior to showing up. I had talked an employee on the phone. She didn’t say anything about the importance on being there exactly at 1pm on the dot. She also didn’t say anything about signing any waivers. It turns out this same person on the phone with me was going to teach this Intro Class. We wanted to use the harness and belay. She told us she can’t teach us anything about that because “we were late”. She said learning the rope and belay takes a full hour. This is impossible since the class is supposed to be only 45 minutes. This “45 minute intro class” turned out to be a total sham. She took 3 minutes to tell us extremely basic common sense safety stuff. She taught us nothing about actually climbing. Then she left us alone to climb on our own. The least she could have done is walk us through step by step on some climbing routes. I could have paid for day passes for 2 people. Instead I paid more for an intro class for 2 people for absolutely nothing. Just because we got there 4 minutes late. Ended up spending most of my time there wanting a refund as we climbed. Not an enjoyable experience at all. Was initially excited to start my membership here but I won’t be coming back after this. On a side note, we thought that this place was not beginner friendly and more well suited for hardcore rock climbing enthusiasts.

Indoor Rock Climbing FAQs

  • Is it safe? Hangar 18 requires an introductory course for all climbing disciplines which teaches techniques and safety and is designed for first-time climbers.
  • What should I wear? Loose-fitting clothing that you can easily move around in. You’ll be able to grab climbing shoes, harness, and other necessary gear onsite.
  • Do I have to be in good shape? Not really—climbing gyms have courses that cater to a wide range of fitness levels. Generally speaking, if you can climb a ladder you can indoor rock climb.
  • What if I’m afraid of heights? Try bouldering, which takes place on shorter walls and doesn’t require harnesses or other top-rope gear. Bouldering focuses more on moving sideways than vertically, so climbers rarely get more than 10–12 feet off the ground.
