Course Eligibility: Must be a Texas resident. Teens must be between ages 14–17 to enroll, and 15–18 years old to apply for the actual physical learner's permit.

Instructor Requirements: The instructor must hold a valid Texas driver's license for the past 3 years and have fewer than 6 points on their driving record.

State Fees: A $20 fee paid directly to TDLR is required to register for the state's Parent-Taught Program (separate from this course fee). When collecting the physical permit at the DPS, a $16 fee applies.

Exam Details & Approvals: Course approved by Texas DPS/TDLR (Course #C3249). The online DPS written exam is built right into the platform, saves an extra trip, and the final exam can be retaken as many times as needed.

How It Works

1. Sign Up and Start — Your teen can begin the self-paced online course immediately on any device, anywhere.

2. Earn the Permit Qualification — Complete the first 6 hours of coursework, pass the built-in online DPS knowledge test, and receive your permit qualification certificate.

3. Get the Physical Permit — Visit your local DPS office to pass a standard vision test and pay the $16 fee to collect the physical learner's permit.

4. Finish the Coursework — Complete the remaining classroom units at your own speed (Texas law requires a minimum of 5 days total for coursework).

5. Log Behind-the-Wheel Hours — Complete 44 hours of parent-led driving practice (7 hours observation, 7 hours direct instruction, and 30 hours general practice, with 10 of those hours completed at night).

6. Complete ITTD — Take the free Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) program required by state law for ages 16–24.

7. Pass the Road Test — Pass your final DPS driving exam and confidently drive off into the sunset!
