What You'll Experience: Exhibits
Aircraft Carrier Intrepid
Launched in 1943, Intrepid survived five kamikaze attacks and one torpedo strike during WWII. The ship later served in the Cold War, the Vietnam War and as a NASA recovery vessel. Today, you can explore its decks like never before.
Submarine Growler
Get a firsthand look at life aboard the Growler, the only American-guided nuclear missile submarine open to the public. Inspect the once “top secret” missile command center and explore the various components used during operations.
Space Shuttle Pavilion
The Space Shuttle Pavilion is home to Enterprise, the prototype NASA orbiter that paved the way for America’s space shuttle program. The Pavilion also features a Soyuz capsule, rotating artifacts and space-themed virtual and augmented reality experiences.
New Permanent Exhibition
Introducing 10,000 square feet of never-before-seen artifacts, former crew member oral histories, hands-on experiences, videos, photos and more. The centerpiece showcases a fully intact, fully restored, World War II FG-1D Corsair fighter-bomber, one of the few remaining of its kind.
British Airways Concorde
The fastest Atlantic Ocean crossing by any commercial aircraft took only 2 hours, 52 minutes and 59 seconds. Get a closer look at this record-breaking, supersonic plane—the British Airways Concorde Alpha Delta G-BOAD—on Intrepid Museum’s Pier 86.
Temporary Exhibits
Final Flight: The Story of a WWII Corsair
On March 18, 1945, a young, newly married naval aviator flew from the USS Intrepid on his first combat mission; it would be his last. He and his F4U-1D Corsair were shot down near the city of Saiki on Japan’s southern main island of Kyushu. Fifty years later, a Japanese fisherman found what is thought to be the remnants of his Corsair.
A View from the Deep: The Submarine Growler and the Cold War
Explore the history of the USS Growler—one of America’s first nuclear-missile submarines—in the context of the Cold War.
On the Line: Intrepid and the Vietnam War
Explore the events and impact of the Vietnam War through the lens of Intrepid’s history. Immerse yourself in the spaces where the crew lived and worked—and hear firsthand about their service and experiences.
